During a news conference Thursday, Police announced the arrest of Amy Leighanne Thomas of Bogalusa. Police said she confessed to the crime.

Thomas faces charges of cruelty to a juvenile, and she could face a charge of first-degree murder now that the baby, identified as Diana Nelson, has died.

Police said Thomas was a friend of the baby’s family and was watching the infant for about an hour and a half Sunday night before giving her to another babysitter.

It was during that time period that police say Thomas beat the baby, burned her with what police believe was a small cigarette lighter and drugged the child.

Thomas allegedly told the second babysitter when she dropped her off the child was sleeping because she was just fed.

When the child appeared unresponsive, the second babysitter called 9-1-1.

Police said Thomas was arrested Wednesday afternoon. She is currently being held without bond and is in isolation at the Bogalusa City Jail.

Police would not detail how or why the abuse happened, but did say they believe Thomas is the only suspect in the case.

Baby Diana’s family said Thursday they are happy to know an arrest has been made and their family is not charged – they said they hope prosecutors seek the death penalty.
