Louisiana State Police officials are investigating a fatal accident on Interstate 10 that backed traffic up for miles Sunday afternoon.

It happened around 4:30 p.m. near Laplace. Investigators said the driver of a black pickup truck was traveling eastbound and lost control before crossing the median into westbound traffic. The truck hit cars.

Eleven people were injured, and a small child is confirmed dead. Another person is in critical condition at the hospital.

Alcohol is suspected as a factor in the crash.
