List of churches set to close, merge or reopen

The Archdiocese of New Orleans announced a sweeping reorganization plan Wednesday – one that affects more than two dozen Catholic Churches across the metro area.

Archbishop Alfred Hughes made the announcement during a news conference Wednesday.

Below is a complete list of all the changes that will be made within the next year.  

Parishes to be Re-opened (3)

These parishes were temporarily closed by the 2006 Pastoral Plan and will now reopen.

 

Our Lady of Lourdes, Violet

New Parishes (2)

This list represents two situations in which two existing parishes will be closed to create a new parish to be named by the parishioners. 

 

St. Francis Xavier Cabrini, New Orleans, and St. Raphael the Archangel, New Orleans

(note: the territory of St. Thomas the Apostle on UNO’s campus will be part of the new parish)

This list contains parishes that will become a mission of a neighboring parish.  In these cases, the church itself will remain open as a place of worship as part of the existing parish.

Holy Guardian Angels, Bridge City, to become a mission of Our Lady of Prompt Succor, Westwego

St. Anthony, Gretna, to become a mission of Holy Name of Mary, New Orleans (Algiers)

St. Pius X, Crown Point, to become a mission of St. Anthony, Lafitte

Parishes to Share a Pastor (8)

These parishes will continue to operate independently with independent lay leadership and maintain all parish activities, but will now share a pastor.

Parishes to Become Campus Ministry Centers (2)

These parishes currently operate on the campuses of local universities.  Under this plan they will no longer be considered parishes, but Campus Ministry Centers.  Pastoral services and Masses will go on as already scheduled.
