Humane Society of La. establishes statewide animal abuse and recovery fund

A statewide animal abuse and recovery fund has been established by the Humane Society of Louisiana in an effort to provide new funding and aid to victims of cruelty and neglect.

Hammond.

It all started with the inspiration of one little dog – Hammond.

Tiny Hammond was found in the middle of the road – too weak to even move. He was rescued by a Good Samaritan and taken to a nearby animal clinic for help.

The poor, exhausted dog was suffering from parasitic infection, mange and malnutrition.

According to Jeff Dorson, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Louisiana, it can cost thousands of dollars to treat neglected animals like little Hammond and many parishes still do not have animal control services or a humane society to deal with the issues.

"That is why we are starting a statewide Animal Abuse and Recovery Fund, for victims of abuse and neglect,” Dorson said. “We hope to create an emergency fund of $10,000 by the end of the year, so that we can step in and provide needed medical care for the little Hammond's of the world.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation can do so through the Humane Society of Louisiana.

Donations can be sent to:

Humane Society of Louisiana

P.O. Box 740321

New Orleans, LA 70174
