New Orleans Police have arrested a 59-year man on dog fighting and animal cruelty charges after finding a pit bull near death and three others in poor condition, according to the Louisiana SPCA.

SPCA Director of Humane Law Enforcement Kathryn Destreza said that Lloyd Mercadel was picked up at his home on Painters Street in New Orleans.

According to Destreza, one of the dogs had massive fractures to its skull and was near death. The other dogs had various scarring and injuries and all four were euthanized after a veterinary exam.
