The Amtrak train basically cut the vehicle in half.

The victims were identified as Draymond Vinning, 53, and Beverly Barnett, 48.

According to Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's deputies, Mr. Vinning drove his car into the path of the train which sent it about 100 yards down the road. Officials believe the couple died on impact.

Sheriff's deputies said the train was likely going at the 79 miles per hour limit that is allowed. They said the train driver was not at fault.

It was the second incident for the Amtrak train Wednesday afternoon. Around 2 p.m., the train struck a car near McComb, Mississippi. The driver in that accident was sent to the hospital.

The wreck near Amite happened near where the train tracks crossed Anderson Road.

The train was on its daily run from Chicago to New Orleans when it hit the vehicle. The train did not derail.

Magliari said the 130 passengers on the train were not injured. The train was delayed several hours.
