Billions for Katrina recovery awaits president’s signature

Billions of dollars for Hurricane Katrina recovery are a step closer to heading to Louisiana.

On Capitol Hill Thursday evening, Senate lawmakers passed a $162 billion war funding bill that includes $5.8 billion for levees and other flood control projects in the New Orleans area.
The bill also includes another $73 million to help provide housing assistance for Hurricane Katrina victims.
Other items on the bill include money for Midwest flood victims, more GI college aid and an extension of jobless benefits.
The bill now heads to President Bush’s desk for his signature.
