HARVEY -- A 57-year-old woman died Thursday night after being the victim of an apparent hit and run accident, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff. Meanwhile, a member of the victim’s family was also charged with attempted first-degree murder for a shooting incident related to the accident. WWL Broadway and 11st Street.
According to Col John N. Fortunato, a Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman, the incident took place around 8:30 p.m. in the 2300 block of Broadway. Police were responding to calls of shots being fired when they found 57-year-old Gloria Ponds lying in the street.
Detectives believed an altercation occurred before the accident between a group of men who were visiting a woman at the victim’s home.
Fortunato said one of the men, 20-year-old Michael Ponds, allegedly armed himself with a gun and began shooting at a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix, driven by 21-year-old Calvin Jackson. As Jackson sped away from the scene, Ponds continued firing at the car.
Fortunato said Jackson turned himself in to authorities Friday morning and provided his account of what happened.
His statements were consistent with the findings of homicide investigators, Fortunato said. Jackson wasn’t charged, but police would consult the Jefferson Parish District Attorney’s Office.
