St. Stephen elated to receive help, shelter from Temple Sinai

Hundreds of parishioners from the Greater St. Stephen Church packed Sunday services not in a church, but in a synagogue.

"This is history," said Bishop Paul Morton of the Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church. "I mean, this is something we never thought we would see."

It started with a fire this past Monday, which gutted the church's Central City location.

It was another gut-wrenching sight for a congregation still dealing with Hurricane Katrina’s destruction of their church in New Orleans East.

"Just totally shocked, totally shocked," said Jacqueline Mayfield, a church member.

With just six days to go before Sunday, the church had no idea if they would find a place in time to hold services.

That’s when Rabbi Edward Cohn of Temple Sinai stepped in. The Uptown synagogue offered their space to the gospel Baptist church.

"We want to offer them a pasture, where they can do their thing and they can do their thing and they can worship god and feel very much at home," said Rabbi Edward Cohn.

"The first words that Rabbi Cohn said to us was, 'this is a house of prayer for all people,'” said church administrator Brandon Boutin. “That statement right there spoke volumes, and just off that alone, we knew this was a place we could come."

And come they did.

They were surrounded by menorahs, preaching and singing, with an eye on rebuilding –  and with deep gratitude for those of another faith, who helped make it happen.

"Rabbi Cohn is awesome, and this whole congregation just to invite us and to take the burden from us, to have to scramble and find a place,” said St. Stephen pastor Debra Morton. “I really think it's the love of God that's just been really exemplified."

Church leaders from Greater St. Stephen said they plan to hold Sunday services at Temple Sinai, for the foreseeable future.
