Sheriff's office spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Paul Robert says Jermaine James was shot when someone opened fire from a passing SUV early Sunday morning.

Robert says deputies found James dead and one of his three passengers with a gunshot wound to the arm.

About 30 minutes later, a deputy pulled over the SUV in Gonzales. After questioning, the six men were arrested in James'

death and two weapons were recovered.

Deputies say the men were booked with one count each of first-degree murder and three counts each of attempted first-degree murder.
