Recall effort launched against AG by Metairie woman
07:46 PM CDT on Tuesday, July 15, 2008
NEW ORLEANS -- A woman from suburban New Orleans has filed a recall petition against state Attorney General Buddy Caldwell.
Josephine Lovoi, who says her Metairie home was destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, has a litany of complaints about Caldwell and his predecessors in the attorney general's post. She says they have failed to enforce laws against fraud, particularly for victims of the 2005 hurricanes.
Lovoi has a big job ahead of her. To force a recall election she would have to get signatures from more than 880,000 voters.
Caldwell, in response to Lovoi's move Tuesday, said his administration has "vigorously pursued legitimate claimes of fraud filed by victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita."
"Ms. Lovoi filed several complaints with the prior administration ... (which) found them to be unsubstantiated," Caldwell said. "We have reviewed those files. She has also contacted this office regarding various additional complaints, all of which have been reviewed. We have concluded that her complaints are without merit."
