Laplace woman killed by sleeping driver on Spillway

09:28 PM CDT on Friday, July 18, 2008

Michael Luke / Eyewitness News

A two-vehicle crash on the Bonnet Carre Spillway killed a Laplace woman, state police reported.

Constance Washington, 43, Laplace, was stopped on the eastbound shoulder of the Spillway with a flat tire. When she went to the trunk of her car, a driver of a van struck Washington and pinned her between her car and the van, state police said.

St. Charles Parish Fire and Rescue freed Washington from between the vehicles and she was transported by helicopter to University Hospital in New Orleans, where she died, according to state police.

The driver of van, William O’Brien, 59, Baton Rouge, told state police that he fell asleep behind the wheel before heading off the road.

State police said that driver impairment is unknown, pending a toxicology examination.

O’Brien was arrested and booked for negligent homicide and careless operation of a motor vehicle.
