NOPD dismisses officers involved in recent incidents

Two officers involved in high-profile incidents that Chief Warren Riley had described as ‘embarrassing’ were dismissed from the NOPD following disciplinary hearings, Riley announced at a press conference Thursday.

Riley said the findings sustained against Sanchell included: Careless operation of a motor vehicle, hit and run, simple battery, professional conduct and failing to maintain the standards of the NOPD.

Sanchell had been accused of speeding across the Crescent City Connection and leading bridge police on a chase through the city to the First District Police station where he allegedly got involved in an altercation that included slapping an officer.

The findings against Terry included violations of: Moral conduct, truthfulness, prematurely drawing her firearm and failing to maintain the standards of the NOPD.

Terry was accused of brandishing a weapon near the Treme Community Center when she arrived to pick up a child from summer camp. Witnesses said Terry got involved in a profane shouting match with another parent and then pulled a gun.

"Did we do them (the investigations) more expeditiously because of the outrage?" said Riley. "Yes, we did."

Riley said that in Sanchell's case, the evidence, in the form of the video, was 'irrefutable.' He said in Terry's case, a large number of witnesses came forward quickly, aiding the investigation.

In another incident that received a lot of publicity, long-time officer Bobby Guidry, who was accused of wearing the wrong type of uniform on his final day at work, was found in violation and will receive a letter of reprimand, according to Riley.

Riley said that the ‘retired under investigation’ would be removed from Guidry’s file due to his cooperation with the investigation.

Both Guidry and Sanchell will have the right to appeal the decisions, Riley said. But because Terry was a rookie cop with 15 months on the job, Riley said, her standing might not be enough to appeal the decision.
