State Senator Derrick Shepherd arrested
05:57 PM CDT on Sunday, July 27, 2008
State Sen. Derrick Shepherd posted a $10,500 bond to get out of the Jefferson Parish jail just before 4 a.m. Sunday.
He’s charged with simple battery, theft over $500 and breaking and entering. Shepherd gave few details about how he ended up in legal trouble a second time.
“I will not tolerate someone attacking or threatening my mother or my sister. If you do that, you have a problem with me. And there's going to be consequences or repercussions,” Shepherd said.
By Sunday afternoon the Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand tells a much different story about an argument gone bad early Saturday morning between Shepherd and his ex-girlfriend.
“We did not hear that story. Be that as it may, according to the allegations of Ms. Ashford, and there seems to be a significant amount of evidence that supports her version of the events and facts,” Normand said.
Detectives said Ashford told them Shepherd was throwing rocks at her bedroom window just after 2 a.m. Saturday morning. After that, a series of struggles followed, with Shepherd allegedly lunging at Ashford, grabbing her arms and hitting her in the stomach.
“She grabbed a small board in order to defend herself and retreated into a locked room on the second floor of that residence. Within seconds, Senator Shepherd forced the door open,” Normand said.
According to investigators, Ashford said Shepherd left when he heard her call 911. But he stole her cell phone and $100 before he left just before 7 p.m. Saturday. Deputies went to arrest Shepherd at his stone bridge home.
“Our officers peered inside senator shepherd's home and they noticed two ladies inside a room with Senator Shepherd, one in which performing a lap dance on his lap in a very provocative way,” Normand said.
Once Shepherd realized deputies were outside his home, they say he tried to sneak the two women out the back of the home, but that's where deputies were waiting for him with an arrest warrant and a search warrant.
One of the items listed in the search warrant, the cell phone, was in fact, recovered from senator shepherd's home.
It’s the second set of felony charges for Shepherd. He’s currently under a federal indictment on money laundering charges. Now, he faces state felony charges because of this latest brush with the law.
"Even though it's not something that’s being alleged that he did in his official capacity as a senator, it still has the potential to reflect negatively on the Louisiana senate as an institution. It's certainly not fair to Senator Shepherd's colleagues. I intend to discuss that with him and explain that it's simply unacceptable," said State Sen. President Joel Chaisson.
What it will mean for his future in the senate is still unclear.
“The last thing he needs right now is more bad publicity, more legal troubles. It strikes me, if you Google spiraling out of control, you might see Derrick Shepherd's face,” said political analyst Clancy Dubos.
