Coast Guard rescues three from Black Bay

07:02 PM CDT on Saturday, August 2, 2008

Michael Luke / Eyewitness News

Three people were rescued after their boat sank in Black Bay near Breton Sound, officials from the Coast Guard said.

Around 6 a.m., a boater sent a distress call when their 17-foot boat sank.  The call was received by the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office and forwarded on to the Coast Guard, said officials from the Coast Guard.

A rescue helicopter was sent, finding three people in the water – only was wearing a life vest and two were clinging to coolers, the Coast Guard said.

All three were rescued and they were safely transported to the Coast Guard Station Venice.  No injuries were reported.

"The Coast Guard encourages all boaters to wear life jackets at all times while on the water, as it greatly increases their chances of survival," said Coast Guard search and rescue controller Petty Office 2nd Class Genica Orria.
