Poydras Street red light, speeding cameras go active Monday

09:30 PM CDT on Sunday, August 3, 2008

Chad Bower / Eyewitness News

Five red light cameras will begin Monday issuing citations for red light and speeding violations.

The following are the intersections of those cameras:

Eastbound St. Charles Avenue at Washington Avenue

Southbound St. Charles Avenue at Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard

Northbound St. Charles Avenue at Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard

Westbound (toward Uptown) St. Charles Avenue at Louisiana Street

Eastbound (toward Downtown) St. Charles Avenue at Louisiana Street

In addition, the following are cameras that have been issuing red light violations, but will also begin issuing citations for going ten or more miles per hour over the speed limit:

Eastbound Poydras Street at St. Charles Avenue

Westbound Poydras Street at Magazine Street

Westbound Poydras Street at Carondelet Street

Drivers exceeding the posted speed limits by ten or more miles per hour through the monitored intersections on green or yellow lights will be issued citations. Drivers who speed through these intersections on a red light will only receive a citation for red-light running at this time.

"Safety is the responsibility of every driver, not just during Stop on Red Week, but every time someone gets behind the wheel of a vehicle," said Robert Mendoza, Director of Public Works. "These red light and speeding cameras are designed to remind drivers of this safety responsibility and, hopefully, get them to slow down and stop when they see a red light."

Violation Fines (excluding $35 cost of enforcement fee):

Traffic Control Signal Violation - $100

Speeding (1 - 9 mph over) - $40

Speeding (10 - 14 mph over) - $75

Speeding (15 - 20 mph over) - $125

Speeding (Greater than 20 mph over) - $200

Late fee for unpaid violations - $75 (vehicles with unpaid violations past the second notice are boot-eligible and subject to immobilization fees)
