Murdered children remembered at Central City service

06:21 PM CDT on Saturday, August 9, 2008

It's a scene family members can’t understand -- as two small caskets are carried out of Providence Baptist Church in Central City. Inside are the bodies of 3-year-old Denim and 7-year-old Randy Sylvester, Jr.

A large crowd of family and friends memorialized the children Saturday. They came to pay their respects and remember the young lives cut short after an unspeakable crime.

"Two loving kids, my grandkids, I love ‘em very much, and we're gonna miss ‘em," said Leonard St. Cyr, the victims’ grandfather.

After a six-day search in June, which kept the Houston metro area on edge, the children's bodies were found -- burned -- near a railroad line in the suburb of Pasadena.

The Sylvester family moved there from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

The prime suspect is the children's father, Randy Sylvester, Sr., who led authorities to his children's remains.

For their mother, and the rest of this grieving family, it's a crime that leaves many questions.

An activist from Texas who helped authorities with the search attended the service.

"Often, we believe we have the words to explain away everything, but there are no words to explain what happened here. These were two beautiful little angels who did not deserve to die like this," said Quanell X.

Authorities in Texas still haven't landed on a motive in the killings.

While he knew where the bodies were, the children's father insists he didn't do it. He says his kids were murdered because of a debt he owed someone.

Those are issues this family will certainly face in the coming months, but the service was a chance to recall happier times.

"When they come to my house, they would want to sleep with me, so I'd go in my office and we'd sleep on the floor in there -- up all night, playing the guitar, just you know, doing what kids do, you know. Very loving kids, and we're gonna miss ‘em," said St. Cyr.
