Price won't step down

06:14 PM CDT on Monday, August 11, 2008

Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price said late Monday afternoon that calls for him to resign following the release of a legislative auditor’s findings about city finances are “ill-advised.”

The auditor’s report detailed what it called $65,000 in questionable expenses by Price and other city leaders that included ; using city vehicles for vacations, paying for gasoline on city credit cards, meals and private parties paid for by city funds and even a golfing trip to Pebble Beach that auditor Dan Daigle said was paid for by a city engineer.

Price said he has asked for a return of the documents used for the auditor’s report so that the city of Mandeville could put together a more detailed response, but he said the people of Mandeville can have confidence in his decisions.

“I can say, unequivocally, that I have never intentionally done anything wrong, nor have I done anything that I did not believe was in the best interest of the City of Mandeville.”

Following the release of the report, Metropolitan Crime Commission chief Rafael Goyeneche called for Price to step down.

“He’s crossed the line and I think the honorable thing for him to do at this point in time is resign,” said Goyeneche. “Now that the curtain has been pulled back and now that the bare bones of what is truly the Price administration has been exposed, it’s up to the public to decide what steps to take.”

Daigle called the report a “mixed bag” that detailed ‘abuse of public funds and poor internal controls’ that he said shouldn’t have happened.

“The planning director routinely goes to San Destin; (and) Charleston, SC, for vacations, using a public vehicle and a credit card for that.”

The legislative auditor’s findings have been given to the FBI, the state attorney general’s office and the St. Tammany Parish district attorney’s office.
