On Thursday afternoon, Jefferson police notified Kenner Police that a Honda Accord was traveling west Airline Highway and it had already been involved in a hit and run at the intersection of Wilker Neal Avenue and Airline, police said.

According to police, after the incident in Metairie, the car ran a red light at Airline and Airport Access road, hitting another vehicle. The vehicle continued, striking a concrete barrier in the 1000 block of Airline, and then swerved into the westbound, hitting a third vehicle.

The driver, who was later identified by police as Christine Bird, 38, Metairie, exited the car with her one-year-son and fled on foot.  Upon reaching a seven foot divider, police said, Bird raised her son to the top of the fence and dropped the child onto the adjoining road.

Police said she then climbed the divider, picking up her son on the other side and continued to flee from police.

Bird was arrested by police while she tried to hide in some shrubs along Airport Access Road, police said.

The child was taken to a hospital, where, according to police, he appears to have sustained no injuries.

Kenner Police charged Bird with a litany of charges: reckless operation of a motor vehicle, hit and run driving, driving while intoxicated, child endangerment, cruelty to a juvenile and possession marijuana.
