Jury sentencing Tuesday for former pastor who faces rape charges

Jury selection will begin Tuesday for Louis Lamonica, one of seven members of the Hosanna Church who face rape charges.

Last month Judge Zoey Waguespack denied Lamonica’s request for a change of venue due to the widespread publicity of the case, though she had said she would move the venue if a jury was not able to be chosen.

Lamonica, who was a pastor at the church, is charged with four counts of aggravated rape of a child that took place from 1999 to 2003. The alleged rape of two victims, both boys, will be the focus of the trial, though Waguespack decided on July 23 that other alleged incidents involving a girl victim can be brought up because they could show Lamonica’s lustful disposition towards children.

The two boy victims are sons of Lamonica.

Lamonica is the second members of the closed-down Tangipahoa church to face child rape charges. The first, Trey Bernard, was convicted in November on rape charges and is serving three life sentences. There are five others awaiting trial for raping Lamonica's two sons and the girl victim, who is Bernard's daughter.
