Homes from Brad Pitt's foundation start going up

09:56 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Tennessee street -- a boulevard of broken dreams after Katrina -- is now a symbol of hope in the devastated lower ninth ward, rising from the mud, and rubble, left in the wake of the storm are the first homes built by actor Brad Pitt's Make It Right Foundation.

Canadian builder Mike Holmes is donating the manpower for one of the homes and featuring the build in a documentary on the Learning Channel.

“When the hurricane first hit,” Holmes said, “I said to all my people, we got to go down there and help them. Let's step forward and help them build a better home that will actually handle a hurricane, 200 miles per hour. When Brad Pitt came out with the make it right, we just said let's do it together.

“This is what I've been praying for,” said Gertie Leblanc, a Lower Ninth Ward neighbor. She was one of the first back in the Lower Nine. She lives in between two Make It Right homes. Miss Gertie says the round the clock construction next door doesn't bother her a bit.

“That's music to my ears. That's right. I know I'm getting my neighborhood back,” she said.

The new homes are state-of-the-art, environmentally friendly and energy efficient. They are also built to withstand the next big storm.

“Since the house is vaulted off the ground, that's going to allow any flooding whatsoever to go underneath it,” Holmes said.

“When I look at the house, I feel good all over,” said Lloyd Griffen, a home owner.

Lloyd and Rosemary Griffen spent the morning watching their new home go up, where their old one once stood.

“I'm feeling elated. I'm glad to get back in the house. I'm just waiting on them to give me the keys,” said Griffen.

Right now, you can see four homes going up in Tennessee Street. But, Make It Right promises that there will be 6 homes completely built and owner occupied by August 29, the third anniversary of Katrina.

“The third anniversary is an important day for the city,” said Tom Darden from the Make It Right Foundation. “Brad Pitt made a promise back in December that we would have the first homes built by the end of the summer. We've been working really hard to meet that goal.”

“It's wonderful to see progress,” Gertie Leblanc.
