St. Bernard Parish mandatory evacuation to begin at 4 pm Saturday

09:52 AM CDT on Saturday, August 30, 2008

St. Bernard Parish says that a mandatory evacuation will begin at 4 p.m. Saturday, according to Parish President Craig Taffaro.

When the evacuation is called, Taffaro said the parish’s borders would be closed and that no one would be let back into the parish. He said that people could still leave the parish hand move about inside the parish, but they could not return once they leave.

Taffaro said that people could leave until a curfew is called, at which time the parish would put out additional patrols that include St. Bernard Parish deputies and National Guard to protect people’s property.

Taffaro said that Sheriff Jack Stephens said that anyone caught moving about the parish after the curfew, with the perceived intention to commit crimes, would be arrested and taken to Angola until the storm passed.
