Contraflow would mean clearing away road work

08:36 AM CDT on Saturday, August 30, 2008

Associated Press

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The road work underway on Interstate 10 in the New Orleans area will be cleared and all lanes opened if Governor Bobby Jindal calls for one-way traffic out of town for evacuation.

Mark Lambert, spokesman for the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, says that's part of every state highway contract.

Lambert says New Orleans, Lafayette and Lake Charles are the three Louisiana cities with contraflow plans for evacuation.

The highways with one-way traffic out would be:

--Interstate 10 going west from Clearview Highway to Interstate 55 in LaPlace;

--Interstate 55 North from Interstate 10 in Hammond either to the Mississippi line or into McComb.

--Interstate 59 north from Slidell into Mississippi.

He also notes that any boats that need to go through drawbridges should do so early. About 10 hours before tropical storm winds hit the coast, those bridges are locked in position for vehicular traffic.
