Montegut Levee holds so far

01:53 PM CDT on Monday, September 1, 2008

Michael Luke / Eyewitness News

Paul Murphy is reporting from Gray, where he has been told by Little Caillou Volunteer Fire Chief Marty Thibodeaux that as of 1 p.m. the Montegut Levee has held.

Thibodeaux also said that south of Chauvin dozens of homes had their roofs ripped off and many homes were destroyed.

He added that the area did not have wholesale flooding, but winds are shifting to the south which could possibly present a problem if water was pushed in towards the area.  But he said it was a wait-and-see situation.

Terrebonne Sheriff Vernon Bourgeois said that many powerlines and trees were down, making the roads nearly impassable, which would make reentry to the parish difficult. He said even after the storm passes, it could be days before residents could return.

Bourgeois said that it appeared that a tornado had touched down in Houma, saying that he saw rows of trees had snapped off.

Murphy reported major damage to Ellender High School and that Bourg grocery roof was heavily damaged. A portion of the roof at State Police Troop B headquarters has been peeled off, exposing the sky from the inside.
