Sheriff: Boy drowns after wandering through damaged fence, into neighbor's pool

07:57 AM CDT on Sunday, September 14, 2008

Tom Planchet / Eyewitness News

A two-year-old Metairie boy drowned after apparently walking through some damaged fence boards that led to a neighbor’s pool Saturday afternoon.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand said the child, identified as Ronald Bushland was rushed to Ochsner Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

According to Normand, first responders arriving at the scene found the child in the front yard of the neighboring residence with someone performing CPR.

Normand said that an investigation by Detective Kevin Decker revealed that the child’s mother had left the boy in her back yard alone for about three minutes and that when she returned, she wasn’t able to find him.

Normand said that with the help of neighbors, Ronald was found in the pool of the adjoining yard. He had apparently walked through some fence boards damaged by Hurricane Ike.
