Nagin to testify before House panel on federal response

10:27 AM CDT on Tuesday, September 23, 2008

Associated Press

New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin is scheduled to testify Tuesday before a House committee on the federal response to this hurricane season.

WWL-TV

On Labor Day, barely three years after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans, Hurricane Gustav dealt the city a glancing blow as it made landfall in south Louisiana. Ike made landfall in Texas 12 days later.

Government at all levels won praise for their preparation leading to Gustav, including the government-coordinated use of buses, trains and planes to evacuate residents who lacked the means to leave New Orleans on their own. It was a sharp contrast to the scene that unfolded in the days leading to and following Katrina.

Nagin has said the planning was better but that he hopes for less bureaucratic snags for recovery money and for levee work to be speeded.
