Oil spill found on Mississippi River

02:11 PM CDT on Sunday, October 5, 2008

Chad Bower / Eyewitness News

The Coast Guard is investigating an oil spill found 30 miles west of New Orleans on the Mississippi RIver.

Coast Guard Sector New Orleans received the report at approximately 3:30 a.m. Sunday. Around 200 gallons of No. 6 fuel oil had discharged form the bulk freighter, the Jimilta II. That number is much lower than the originally estimated 630 gallons the Coast Guard had anticipated.

The cause of the spill is under investigation.
