Voodoo Experience:
Money back guarantee with The Vettes
03:56 PM CDT on Sunday, October 26, 2008
If you don’t like it, they don’t want you to have it.
The Vettes his the Voodoo Stage Sunday at 12:50.
Rachel Vette, lead singer of the New Orleans-bred The Vettes, which is playing at the Voodoo main stage Sunday, said that one of the things about her band that screams New Orleans attitude is its 100 percent money back guarantee for their newest album.
“We’d rather you give it to someone who’ll love it,” the Loyola University alumna said of the album.
Since The Vettes first launched their “T.V. E.P.” last March, there hasn’t been an instance where they’ve needed to put their money where their mouths are.
After a fan introduced their lead single, Give ‘Em What They Want, to Top 40 station
B97’s program director Mike Kaplan in May, the listener response skyrocketed, propelling this young family of five into local stardom .
“We were shocked,” Rachel said. “It was so encouraging to get such a positive response. We never expected for New Orleans to come around to our music first, because it’s so different from popular music in the city.”
The brassy sounds of New Orleans are a far cry from The Vettes soft-rock sound, influenced by big ‘80s bands like Duran Duran and A Flock of Seagulls. But many of the band’s tracks speak exclusively about overcoming hardship, something that all New Orleanians can relate to, said Rachel.
“‘Invincible’ is definitely a song that relates to overcoming hard times,” she said. “We are definitely influenced by the city in our topic choices.”
New Orleans’s love for The Vettes became contagious in areas all around Louisiana, such as Lafayette and Shreveport, where stations now play their catchy single. After tours in Houston and Beaumont, Texas, fans got what they wanted on radio stations there. And the love even reached MTV, who has licensed the band’s music for use in its shows.
With all the performances, tours, and hype, The Vettes don’t get much time to plan new tracks for their growing audience.
“Making the E.P. into an album is something that we are planning, but we will probably be able to get to that sometime in December,” Rachel said. “We are also going to film the video for Give ‘Em What They Want around that time.”
Until then, they’ll stay busy, averaging at four or more shows a week with 30 shows planned by the end of the year, said Rachel.
Even after getting love in New York at a performance at the College Music Journal Fest last Thursday, and heading out this Sunday for two straight weeks on the road in Texas, The Vettes are the most excited about the love they’ll receive on the main Voodoo Stage Sunday morning.
“When Voodoo approached us about a Sunday lineup, we were really excited that they wanted us to perform, especially on that day,” Rachel said. “I think we have some of the same fan base as Panic at the Disco, who will be on later, and we really appreciate what they do.”
Fans can expect The Vettes to bring New Orleans attitude to the main stage at Voodoo Experience at 12:50 a.m., and here’s a friendly reminder for all the New Orleanians out there: if you don’t like them, take someone else to Voodoo who will.
