FEMA: La. storm victims can still apply for aid

07:24 AM CST on Thursday, November 6, 2008

Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS -- Victims of hurricanes Gustav and Ike can still apply for aid through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

FEMA says registration deadlines were extended at the state's request to Dec. 3 for Gustav victims and Dec. 11 for Ike victims.

FEMA says eligible applicants could get such help as temporary rental assistance or grants or loans to fix up or replace damaged property and belongings. The agency does issue the reminder that the federal aid isn't meant to cover all losses but to help storm victims get back into livable quarters.

FEMA says 20 parishes have been designated federal disasters for Ike and 53 for Gustav.

To register, the agency says people can go to www.fema.gov or call 1-800-621-FEMA.
