Water main break leaves huge hole in Lakeview yard
02:31 PM CST on Wednesday, November 12, 2008
Rose Mogabgab spent nearly two years "in exile" from New Orleans and was able to return to a new home in New Orleans just about a year ago.
She missed her city. And now, she misses her front yard.
A water main break has collapsed a large section of her front yard, including parts of her driveway, sidewalk and flower bed.
She said the problem initially began November 2 when she called the Orleans Parish Sewage and Water Board to report water springing up from under her driveway, a problem that caused part of the driveway to collapse. Crews made makeshift repairs at the time, leaving part of her driveway covered by large wooden planks.
Early Wednesday morning, the problems resurfaced, eating away another part of her driveway and frontyard and creating a large crater on her property.
Mogabgab blames the water board for not responding sooner to her complaints and for not fully repairing the problem nearly two weeks ago.
"This started Sunday, November the second, at two o'clock in the morning, and the Sewage and Water Board didn't respond to the call until nine o'clock in the morning," she said. "And, in the meantime, the damage got worse and worse and half of my driveway is basically gone."
There is one silver lining, however. Water board officials have told Mogabgab that she can make claims against the agency due to the damage to her personal property.
We did reach the sewage and water board for this story and are still awaiting comment.
