Hundreds of families in South Louisiana are still suffering from the remnants of hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

But one of the hardest hit areas in Plaquemines Parish is focused on a comeback, and they're grateful for the opportunity.

In the small community of Ironton there is a lot to be thankful for. For the Compton family, the celebration centers around food, football and family.

"Everyone should be thankful, we came from a long ways through all the disasters," said Barbara Compton.

Hurricane Katrina devastated the Ironton community, and the Compton family. Then, for three years, everything was fine. Then Gustav and Ike hit, and families were flooded out of their homes, again.

Water topped the levees, forcing families out for days, some for weeks. The damage Gustav and Ike left behind is described as a smaller version of the desolation from Katrina, but just as physically and emotionally scarring.

"Coming back to what you had, what you left, it was a coldness in the feeling that you had lost so much from the diasters," said Compton.

"It was devastating, everybody lost a lot," said her daughter, Tijuana Compton. "But everything is coming around, everyone is coming together and the community finally got a chance to rebuild so it looks much better now."

The Comptons said Ironton, which they describe as a tight-knit community, is almost 100% back to normal. And, to the unfamiliar eye, nothing has really changed. Residents though, know where they have been, what they have endured and realize storms could be in their future.

"We are so close to the levees and there's no telling if it's going to be a disaster and no telling if its worse the next time," said Compton's daughter Ashley Feloss.

But, the Comptons will always be grateful, on this day and everyday, for each other.

"Through the grace of God it's all coming back together," said Barbara Compton.
