Be safe when shopping Friday
12:08 PM CST on Friday, November 28, 2008
The holiday buying season is a time when thefts can go up in and outside of malls and shopping centers.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office says it will have extra security at both Oakwood and Lakeside malls.
Deputies say shoppers should be aware of their surroundings, travel in groups, and always be on the lookout for trouble.
“When you're walking to your vehicle, have your keys ready, approach your vehicle, prepare to get in, don't fumble around in your purse trying to get your keys out, placing packages or your purse on your car, the things that we always like to say this time of year, to be cognizant, to be prepared and to do all you can to prevent yourself from becoming a victim.” Said Jefferson Parish Col. John Fortunato.
Here are some other tips for when you're in the mall:
- Before shopping, clean out your wallet and take only the credit cards, checks and/or cash that you need for the day.
- Never carry your social security card in your wallet.
- And don't leave valuables in plain site in your car; also, remember your car's glove compartment isn't a secret hiding place from thieves.
