‘Tis the season for holiday shoppers and criminals looking for easy targets.

That's why the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office will have extra details and eyes in the sky at Lakeside and Oakwood Malls.

Police in New Orleans are also stepping up security along the shopping districts on Magazine and Canal Streets.

"Those areas where we think shoppers are going to congregate, we will not only have walking patrols, but we'll have bicycle patrols as well as scooter and vehicular patrols," said Deputy Superintendent Marlon Defillo from the New Orleans Police Department. .

Police say don't get caught up in the buying frenzy, stay on guard and be aware.

"When you're walking to your vehicle, have your keys ready, approach your vehicle, prepare to get in, don't fumble around in your purse trying to get your keys out, placing packages or your purse on your car," said Col. John Fortunato from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.

"Be familiar with who is standing to the left or right of you," said Deputy Superintendent Defillo. "Inside of the shopping center, don't carry large sums of money. If you're standing in line, don't expose your wallet or your purse."

"When you're out in the stores, know where you're credit card is at," said Trooper Joe Piglia from the Louisiana State Police. "Don't let it disappear from your sight. If something seems wrong, talk to a manager about it."

Police say you should also be on guard when shopping online.

"There are some good websites, there are some good legitimate businesses," said Trooper Piglia. "But, research that before you give out that credit card number."

Police say if you're going to be going from store to store, it's best to stow you packages and valuables in the trunk. They also say the glove compartment is not a good place to stash your wallet because that's the first place burglars look when they break into your car.

One more word to the wise, if you park on the street make sure it's a legal parking spot and make sure you feed the meter.

Friday, New Orleans Parking Enforcement Officers were writing lots of tickets along Magazine Street.
