One man dead in Fourchon after flipping vehicle and landing in bayou

03:32 PM CST on Sunday, November 30, 2008

Chad Bower / Eyewitness News

A man died Saturday after his vehicle flipped upside down in a bayou near Fourchon, according to Troop I Public Information Officer David Anderson.

49-year-old Fernando Alvarez of Austin, Texas, was driving northbound LA Hwy. 1, around five miles south of Fourchon, around 8 p.m. Saturday night. He lost control of the vehicle and veered right off of the roadway. The vehicle flipped and came to rest upside down in the bayou.

Alvarez was under water for an extended period of time and was pronounced dead on the scene. It is not known if alcohol use was a factor in the crash, as tests are still pending.
