Raceland man killed early Friday morning; suspect surrenders

A Raceland man was killed Friday morning when he was shot from “point-blank range” in the head.

Cornell Deon Smith, known as Bean, is wanted for second degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Lafourche Sheriff’s Officers responded minutes before 2:30 a.m. to reports of gun fire at 388 Greenville St., where they found Quincy Scott, 25, with a gun shot to the head.

According to Sheriff Craig Webre, Scott’s brother Christopher Gaudet said a man named “Bean” shot his brother after he had been playing with the gun most of the night. Officers have identified Bean as Cornell Deon Smith.

Witnesses told officers Smith’s girlfriend Lindsey Matherne left with him and drove to New Orleans. Officers arrested Matherne, 23, at a truck stop in Des Allemands at 6:15 a.m. and charged her with accessory after the fact to second degree murder.

Smith, 23, was wanted for second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Around 8:45 p.m. Friday, he turned himself into police at the Lafourche Parish Detention Center in Thibodaux, according to the Lafourche Sheriff’s Office.
