LAFAYETTE, La. -- McCall Tomeny put the exclamation point on an otherwise lackluster showdown with a slam dunk for two of his team-high 20 points with 45 seconds left to lead No. 1-seeded Christian Life of Baton Rouge to a 49-42 victory over the No. 2-seeded Country Day for the Class 1A title on Saturday.
The win gives Christian Life its fourth Class 1A state title in the last five years. Country Day ended the Crusaders' three-year run with a 58-49 win last season.
Leading only 36-35 with 2:13 left, the Crusaders (37-5) made 12 of 14 free throws the rest of the way to secure the victory.
Christian Life won despite tying an all-class record and breaking a Class 1A Top 28 record set in 1981 by Bernice High by being held scoreless in the second period.
Country Day (41-6) was led by LSU signee Matt Derenbecker with 24 points and seven rebounds, but he also had eight turnovers.
