NEW ORLEANS -- It's become a successful tool to help law enforcement agencies crack cases across nine parishes in Louisiana.

Crimestoppers GNO held a benefit concert on Wednesday night to raise money to fight crime.

"We just helped in a case announced in Slidell this past weekend, of a young man who was murdered in Slidell," said Crimestoppers GNO President Darlene Cusanza.

The case unfolded this past weekend. Authorities say it involved the death of a 23-year-old man who was robbed and shot in the head. His body was dumped in a ditch.

Tips to Crimestoppers landed five suspects behind bars.

Notable musicians gathered Wednesday night inside Generations Hall to support the anti-crime organization. The impressive line-up included David Batiste, Doctor John, Allen Toussaint and Sunpie Barnes.

"Its not about laying back, sitting, complaining. You can look outward into the rest of the world. But in New Orleans we're homogeneous. We look inward," said Barnes.

The Zydeco master volunteers his time year after year in an effort to curb crime in the city he loves.

"It brings the spirit of the city together in the best possible way, to make a safe environment where we can live and future generations," added Barnes.

Organizers say fundraising events continue to help Crimestoppers fund rewards and run crime prevention programs.

"We have a crime problem in the city. We've had it for years. Crimestoppers is a great organization, they need funding and they need support," said actor Bryan Batt, who emceed the event.

Local leaders and celebrities mingled with guests to make sure that Crimestoppers continues to curb crime across the metro area and beyond. It's a program that more and more people now trust.

"Crimestoppers has done extremely well with our calls and our tips. I think last year, we had a 10 percent increase overall," said Cusanza.

Crimestoppers GNO has another fundraising event scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 at Mardi Gras World. For details, click here
