The city of New Orleans has shut down the newly rebuilt Markey Playground in the Bywater due to lead contamination.

The City Health Commissioner, Dr. Karen DeSalvo, says the city will find a way to remediate the area and that testing of other parks and playgrounds is now underway.

Exposure to lead, a neurotoxin, is known to disrupt the development of the brain and central nervous system and is especially dangerous for young children.

A specialist on lead contamination and its impact, Dr. Howard Mielke of the Tulane/Xavier Center for Bioenvironmental Research discusses the possible impact of lead contamination in New Orleans’ public playgrounds and parks.
