NEW ORLEANS - It has been a tough week for Papa Johns Pizza on Holiday Drive in Algiers with two delivery drivers robbed at gunpoint.
Police say a man approached a driver Wednesday morning in the parking lot outside the store. The robber demanded the victim's property and store deposits that he was getting ready to take to the bank.
Less than 24 hours earlier, three men reportedly robbed 33-year-old Chad Burnetz as he was delivering pizza in the 3400 block of Huntlee Drive, not far from Edna Karr High School.
His mother Deborah Cantrell says the men approached her son from the carport of what appears to be a vacant home.
"One held a gun to him, told him to give them his wallet, he gave them his wallet," said Cantrell.
"Another individual went to his car, took his keys and the third person punched him in his face."
Her son is now recovering from his injuries.
"He has a huge black eye. He had a knot on his head."
One neighbor who did not want to identified said drug dealers use the empty home as a storefront to peddle crack and heroin.
"It's very upsetting," she said. "I live with two elderly family members, my mother and father, and they're old and they're scared to death."
Burnetz's mother says her son did not get a good description of his attackers.
"He said because the gun was being pointed at him, he said his eye was on that gun just waiting for the bullet to come out of the barrel."
Papa Johns' manager did not want to appear on camera, but the safety coordinator for the local franchisee says this is a frightening turn of events for the Algiers store, and unfortunately a symptom of a much larger crime problem here on the West Bank.
It's a crime problem now leaving some Algiers residents in fear.
"I'm already having threats," said one neighbor. "Paint balls shot at my house, warning me not to say anything. I'm just tired of it."
"They really need to address this crime situation," said Cantrell.
The gunman accused of robbing a pizza driver outside the Algiers Papa Johns is described as a black man, 25 to 30 years old -- about 6 feet tall -- and 200 pounds.
