NEW ORLEANS, La. -- It's one of the first major business renovations to help the slow recovery that has occurred in New Orleans East since Hurricane Katrina, and now the new site has begun taking applications for employment from local residents.

Crews have been making steady progress on the new Walmart site in New Orleans East, and at the same time, Walmart management is opening its new hiring center right down the street.

The doors were flooded with applicants Monday, applicants like Chrishanna Belvin who says the closest Walmart store is several miles away.

“It is great because we don't have one here, we have to go to Chalmette to do any shopping. It would be great to just come out here," Said Belvin.

The mayor's office along with several city leaders were on hand for the opening.

Mayor Mitch Landrieu said several of those available positions could potentially be filled by residents who live in the area.

"Folks are going to have a place to work. These are 300 real jobs with good wages and good benefits and they are going to provide a great service."

The Walmart Hiring Center is located at 5931 Bullard Avenue, Suite 12 in New Orleans East. Applications will be accepted Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., and interested applicants may also apply online, by clicking here.

In addition, through Walmart’s Veterans Welcome Home Commitment, the company will offer a job to any qualified veteran who has been honorably discharged within the past 12 months. Interested veterans may find out more, by clicking here.
