Baton Rouge hoping to cash in on proximity to Super Bowl

BATON ROUGE, La.-- At the Hotel Indigo in downtown Baton Rouge, they are prepping for a potential Super Bowl onslaught.

"We are approaching capacity," said Margaret Chappuis, the hotel's director of sales. "We have some rooms left on that Sunday and Saturday night -- but it is filling up."

With New Orleans hosting the Super Bowl just 80 miles away, Baton rouge is looking to take advantage of geography. Tourism officials there are advertising their 10,000 area hotel rooms to football fans in the potential cities that could field a Super Bowl-bound team.

"We will go into those markets encouraging, inviting those individuals that if they can't get to New Orleans -- by accessibility or affordability or availability -- that Baton Rouge is an alternative," said Paul Arrigo, president of "Visit Baton Rouge."

The hospitality industry in the state capital hopes the Super Bowl brings them a 90 percent hotel occupancy rate, on what would otherwise be a quiet weekend. Beyond just providing a place to stay, though, Baton Rouge is pushing its own attractions, including casinos, and they are putting together their own Super Bowl fan experience.

Workers are currently building a stage in Town Square to host musical acts in the days leading up the game. The city is also highlighting the three carnival parades that will roll there that weekend.

"So, we've got a New Orleans experience already," Arrigo said, "and we've got the aouth Louisiana lagniappe that we like to share with our visitors."
