NEW ORLEANS - New Orleanians have a knack for the unique. It's reflected in the culture, food, language, and even the way holidays are celebrated.
The city wants to attract locals and visitors, and as a draw for tourists, great travel and lodging rates are offered, as well as restaurant deals.
"Christmas New Orleans Style" is a "traditional New Orleans holiday seasonal celebration," said Mark Romig, the president of the New Orleans Tourism and Marketing Commission.
Concerts, cooking demonstrations, downtown hotel decorations and holiday lights are some of the attractions the city has focused on.
"New Orleans does it better than, I think, any city. In fact, we're one of the top rated destinations for the holidays and New Years Eve," Romig said.
The celebration lasts through Twelfth Night, which is January 6.
"We've had a great first half of the year. We're tracking very well with a lot of good visitor spending, which really equates to increased jobs and opportunities for the small businesses in the area. We're hoping that we end the year very positively, and then we move into 2013 with the Super Bowl," Romig said.
The city's plans for Christmas New Orleans Style were announced at the Longue Vue House and Gardens at 10 a.m.
