SLIDELL, La. — A drunk-driving presentation in Slidell has been delayed after officers were forced to attend to a real drunk-driving accident just blocks away.

A Slidell Police spokesman said the “Booze N’ Cruise, You Lose!” mock crash was set to be performed at Slidell High School, using the “Jaws of Life.”

But moments before they were set to begin the exhibition, emergency crews were called to rescue 40-year-old Miranda Byrnes, whose pickup truck overturned at the intersection of Gause Boulevard and Eastridge Drive.

“It is ironic that this type of crash occurred while we were giving a presentation at the same time,” Slidell Police Chief Randy Smith said. “We are lucky no one was seriously hurt and hope that the combination of the real crash and the mock crash sent a strong message to the seniors at Slidell High School today.”

According to police, witnesses said Byrnes was passed out behind the wheel before striking a light pole, flipping the truck over.

Once rescued, the spokesman said Byrne was found to be intoxicated and in possession of Suboxone and Oxycodone. She was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, possession of a schedule II narcotic, possession of a schedule III narcotic, no seat belt and careless operation of a motor vehicle.
