COVINGTON, La. - Workers at Mugshots Restaurant were slammed with customers from the moment the doors opened Monday morning.
But most of the people weren't there because of the holiday or the food. They came for St. Tammany Sheriff’s Office Deputy Cody Talley.
"He's still in ICU, he's breathing on his own, the vent machine is out,” said Talley’s uncle, Mark Beverly. “His lungs are getting better. So with each passing day he's getting better and better."
The 26-year-old was in a serious one-vehicle crash on Hwy. 40 in Folsom on Jan. 2, just as he was ending his shift for the night. He suffered injuries to his leg, chest and head.
A wife and her 3-year-old and 4-month-old children wait patiently every day for better news, all while the community has turned out in droves to support them in any way possible, like today.
Ten-percent of every meal served, from open to close, goes to help with medical bills expected to come with long-term rehabilitation efforts. The restaurant is giving 20 percent from every bill belonging to a first responder.
"I think it's an incredible opportunity to minister this family and help them out. We appreciate our law enforcement and all they do to keep our community safe," said customer Jim Brazell.
"St. Tammany is known for that. They show love for the sheriff's office and law enforcement in general,” said Lt. Michael Farrell. “A lot of times they go out of their way to assist us in any way they can, so it's fantastic to see everybody come together."
And the Talley family is overwhelmed with gratitude.
"We can't thank the community enough for their support and their prayers for what's been going on," Beverly said. "We've been given support from law enforcement all over this country and as a family we just can't thank them enough for that."
Tuesday, a similar fundraiser is being held at the Texas Roadhouse locations in Covington and Slidell. There will also be one Tuesday at Speckled T's in Slidell.
There are also raffles and auctions taking place on a Facebook page dedicated to Talley’s recovery. Click here for more information.
