NEW ORLEANS - A police officer was shot while responding to a robbery near Poland and St. Claude avenues early Saturday morning, according to police.

The officer, whose name was not released, is in serious condition and in the hands of doctors at the LSU interim hospital, according to Superintendent Ronal Serpas.

Serpas said the officer was responding to the Dollar General Store and was inside when he was attacked and shot by a suspect, who then fled the scene.

Serpas said that a former officer who was at the scene picked up the injured officer's police radio and called in the incident.

Serpas described the suspect as an African-American male between 30 and 40 years of age, 5'7" in height, wearing a grey hoodie, blue jeans and a blue and white bandana.

SWAT teams and other units are on the scene combing the area for the suspect.
