Slidell firefighters are doing extra duty for the next two weeks. They have set up donation bins at each of the seven fire stations in St. Tammany Fire District Number One to collect food for the tornado victims in Moore, Oklahoma.
"We might be able to participate in a thank you back to people who were so gracious to us following Hurricane Katrina," said St. Tammany Fire District 1 Chief Larry Hess. "Collecting food, not only for people, but pet food as well."
They'll take food donations through June Seventh, then the food gifts go to tornado victims as they work to rebuild their lives and community.
"We're gonna take all the collected goods, and we're going to package them, and put them on a truck, and move them up to Journey Church in Norman, Oklahoma, that has been designated the food distribution center for this disaster," Hess said.
While Slidell Firefighters are seeking donations of food, let me show you where they're collecting other types of supplies...The owner of Baton Rouge based Jasper Roofing Contractors put out the word to all 12 company offices, including the one in Metairie, next to the I-10 Service Road at Severn. They are looking for specific donations for the Moore tornado victims.
"We're looking for baby items, and powdered formula, and we're looking for trash bags, and toiletry items, and undergarments, and blankets," said Stephanie Lammers of Jasper Contractors.
You can drop off donations Saturday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and they'll be shipped to Church of the Harvest in Oklahoma City.
"They are actually setting up shelters in the Oklahoma City area," said Lammers, "and our items are getting shipped directly to them." You can find Jasper Contractors at 3409 North I-10 Service Road in Metairie, or call them at 681-6117.
