NEW ORLEANS -- The threat of a tropical storm did not prevent thousands from enjoying this weekend's festivals and Saturday night the party continued on the West Bank as Chicago took the stage at the Gretna Heritage Festival.

Gretna Fest got off to a soggy start Saturday afternoon, but that did not stop the thousands of people from packing the streets of Gretna to enjoy the music and festivities.

"I am telling everybody, 'Come on out,' said Gretna Mayor Belinda Constant. "Really, it is a little rain storm here and there, but we know how to deal with those things here in the city."

Folks took cover under tents as scattered showers popped up through out the afternoon. City officials say the festival will go on as scheduled, but they say they are not letting their guard down.

"We have been closely monitoring this hour-by-hour, and we will continue to do that throughout the end of the festival," says Mayor Constant.

Across the river, dozens more soaked up the sun at Gentilly Fest.

"We are so elated. God has blessed us with some beautiful weather," said Gretchen Bradford who helped put on the event. "We even got a little breeze."

Although event organizers said the threat of Karen would not stop the festivities in Gentilly, some festival goers were doubtful.

"We really were concerned, I already prepared to evacuate," said Gentilly resident Winnifred Magee. "I will be honest with you, I was going to go stay with my sisters in Baton Rouge."

A few clouds and rain early in day only heightened that concern.

"I parked and I looked up at this cloud. and I said, 'That does not look great,' and then two minutes later we had a brief downpour and that was it," said Magee.

But in the end, the wet weather did not dampen spirits.
