NEW ORLEANS - Sheriff Marlin Gusman wasted little time and minced few words in pointing the finger of blame about the conditions at the Orleans Parish Prison at Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the city.

Gusman said efforts to talk to Landrieu about a plan to fix the jail and rehabilitate the facilities has fallen on deaf ears.

He accused the mayor of throwing mud on his ideas.

"I was ignored repeatedly," he said at a Thursday afternoon press conference. "The mayor chooses to waste time with Washington-style politics and Archie Bunker rhetoric."

The two men have been at odds, especially recently as Landrieu has faced the costly prospect of the city having to pay for a consent decree for both the NOPD and the prison at a time when the city is already having money issues.
