JEFFERSON, La. -- Changing Carnival parade routes and doubling up parades on some days were hot topics Tuesday night in Jefferson Parish.

The East Bank Carnival Advisory Committee met for the first time at the Yenni Building to talk about possible changes to the Veterans Memorial Boulevard parade route.

Ideas being considered include eliminating the route's loop on Bonnabel Boulevard, extending the route west past Clearview Parkway, reversing the Veterans route so that parades run east to west, and making Metairie Road an alternate route.

Committee members had mixed reaction about the proposed changes.

“Is there a way that we could have a Carnival parade on a more of an oak-lined street, if you will?” said Todd Murphy of Krewe of Argus. “Something that's a little more conducive, family friendly that's not on four lanes of traffic."

“Our people really love Veterans Boulevard. We have no intentions of having our parade go down Metairie Road,” said Krewe of Caesar Captain Bob Carnesi.

The committee says any proposed parade route changes would need to be introduced to the parish council by June. A council vote would then be slated for August.
