CHALMETTE, La. - Dozens of suspects accused of buying and selling drugs are set to be arrested in St. Bernard Parish in a pre-dawn drug roundup on Wednesday, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.
The round up is phase two of "Operation Summer Heat." Phase one took place in September, and 42 people were rounded up on suspicion of drug sales charges.
The 38 people targeted in phase two may be charged in relation to crack cocaine, prescription pills, marijuana and heroin.
One of the factors that concerns authorities is that there are eight warrants for heroin sales, which is something that's becoming more of a problem in the parish, according to authorities.
The sheriff's office believes there may be an increase in heroin usage in the parish.
Eight women and 30 men are being targeted. They will be brought to the staging area on Judge Perez Drive to be processed.
The sheriff said undercover operations will continue year-round.
"Whether you're dealing here or if it reaches out to New Orleans or wherever it takes us, we're going to come get you," said Sheriff Jimmy Pohlmann.
Heavily armed deputies are being assisted by members of the Drug Enforcement Administration and Louisiana State Police.
